Types of low carbon energy:

UK energy needs

Peel energy remains confident that opportunities in renewable energy will continue to become available in the UK and is currently working hard to understand which direction UK Energy Policy is heading in so that the business can adapt accordingly.

Stated government intentions include plans to:

  • Source 15% of all energy from renewable sources by 2020
  • Generate up to 35% of electricity from renewable sources by 2020
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions: a reduction of at least 34% by 2020, and at least an 80% cut by 2050
  • Increase the amount of heat generated from renewable and low carbon sources that can be used by industry, businesses and housing.

The total of all renewable electricity sources provided for 14.9% of the electricity generated in the United Kingdom in 2013, reaching 53.7 TWh of electricity generated. In the second quarter of 2015, renewable electricity penetration exceeded 25% and coal generation for the first time.

The Scottish Government has set a target to generate the equivalent of 100% of the country's electricity needs from renewables by 2020 – renewables contributed 49% in 2014.
