If approved this scheme could generate enough electricity to meet the average needs of more than 8,500 homes – 40% of the households in the Borough of Melton.
Extensive environmental surveys are being undertaken on the site of the former Asfordby mine, but early indications are that it is a good location for a wind farm of 10 turbines.
Each of the 125-m turbines would generate approximately 2.3 MW of electricity. With a capacity of up to 23MW, the scheme would make a significant contribution towards helping the UK meet its national renewable energy targets.
Although we do not expect to make a planning application until the autumn of 2010, we are committed to early engagement with key stakeholders, including the local community.
The first stage of this is the publication of our environmental statement scoping report, which has been issued to Melton Borough Council and various statutory consultees. The comments we receive in response to the scoping report will inform the range of environmental issues that we look at in detail when considering our wind farm design and making the subsequent planning application submission.
We wanted to hear the local communities views on our proposals and were pleased to hold a public drop-in session that took place in August this year.
We have undertaken some scoping and survey work for the site, and whilst this work is still ongoing, we were keen to discuss our proposals at that stage.
Once we have collated the feedback from this session and had time to consider this fully, we will complete the design of the wind farm, and we will organise a public exhibition with more detailed information including results of environmental survey work and photo montages of how the turbines would look from a number of viewpoints.
We will publicise these events in due course on this web site and in the local media.
