Biomass

Peel Energy has identified sites for the development of a series of biomass power stations at Peel Group facilities across the UK and on third-party land. These sites represent viable opportunities for biomass energy facilities with a potential output of 20–30MW or up to 300MW each.

Biomass is renewable because it is sourced from plants and trees. It is also considered to be carbon neutral as the carbon dioxide released during combustion is equivalent to the amount absorbed by the plant during its growth cycle.

Biomass has an important part to play in Peel Energy's low carbon strategy. The port and canal-side sites, often also served by rail, provide a good diversity of transport options to source fuels from multiple locations in bulk.

Combined heat and power plants will be developed where possible to increase the energy efficiency of the installation where there is a complementary requirement for heat from adjoining industrial, commercial or residential developments.
