The Barton Renewable Energy Plant has gained the backing of well-known TV presenter and scientist Adam Hart-Davis.
The former BBC Tomorrow’s World presenter, also known for the popular TV series, What the Romans Did for Us and subsequent spin-offs, has fronted a video production for Peel Energy that explains why the company is proposing the Barton Renewable Energy Plant project that will be capable of providing low carbon electricity to 37,000 homes in Trafford.
Dr Hart-Davis, who is a long-time advocate of alternative energy generation, said: “We have relied on fossil fuels for far too long, and unless we wean ourselves off them we shall continue polluting the atmosphere, which is going to cause big problems sooner rather than later.
“We also need to find enough new sources of electricity generation to ensure that we don’t suffer from power cuts in a few years. Our demand for electricity to maintain our lifestyles is forever increasing, but the traditional fuels we use in power stations are limited and decreasing.
“Along with other sources of renewable energy such as wind and solar power, biomass has an important part to play. Biomass is virtually carbon neutral and is a reliable and predictable fuel, and furthermore its energy output can be turned up or down to provide exactly the amount of power we need at any particular time.
“The Barton Renewable Energy Plant is an excellent proposition that will give secure electricity and heat to communities in Trafford for the next 25 years. I believe it will be among the first of many biomass plants in this country, making valuable energy from waste wood that until now has been dumped to rot in landfill sites.”
Peel Energy project director Jon England said: “It’s great that Adam has become involved to help the Barton Renewable Energy Plant become a reality. His reputation as an eminent scientist goes before him and his enthusiasm for the proposal shines through in the film we have made.”
