PEEL Energy has today expanded its low carbon energy development pipeline by signing an agreement to develop wind farms across UK COAL's extensive land portfolio.
Peel Energy, which recently commissioned England's largest on-shore wind farm, secures exclusive access to wind farm opportunities on UK COAL's land for two years.
Under the agreement, Peel Energy's wind farm development team will lead a programme of phased development through to planning permission. Individual joint ventures between Peel Energy and UK COAL will then construct and operate the wind farms.
Fourteen existing projects, already initiated by UK COAL, fall within the agreement. These projects are at varying stages from inception to planning negotiations and, if all were successful, would have the potential for 54 wind turbines generating up to 133MW of power.
Jon Lloyd, chief executive of UK COAL, said: "We believe there is significant opportunity to develop wind farms on parts of our land portfolio.
"By allying with Peel Energy, we are joining forces with one of the UK's most active and knowledgeable wind power companies. This will accelerate our alternative power business whilst maintaining total flexibility on the level of investment we make in it and without distracting us from our core mining and property development operations."
Steven Underwood, Director of Peel Energy, added: "This agreement is an important step for Peel Energy, significantly expanding its onshore pipeline and gaining access to some of the UK's best potential wind farm locations.
"We look forward to working with UK COAL to realise the wind power potential of its extensive land portfolio."
Peel Energy's on-shore wind portfolio is in excess of 450MW and includes a range of schemes in operation, under construction or in development.
Operational wind farms range from the six-turbine, 3.6MW scheme at Royal Seaforth Docks in Liverpool constructed in 1999, to the recently commissioned Scout Moor in Lancashire.
This 26-turbine, 65MW scheme can generate enough low carbon energy to meet the average annual electricity needs of around 40,000 homes, roughly half the houses in a town the size of Rochdale.
Peel Energy, part of the Peel Group, is at the forefront of delivering low carbon energy for the UK.
It has a balanced portfolio of more than 3GW in generation or development including wind, tidal power, energy from waste, biomass and multi-fuel power plants with carbon capture and storage. That's enough to power the average electricity needs of more than 3 million homes.
