Scout Moor Wind Farm official launch

19 September 2008

Peel Energy's Scout Moor wind farm is to be officially "switched on" on 25 September 2008.

Invited guests including councillors, members of the construction team and employees from Peel Energy will gather for the launch on moorland in Edenfield, Lancashire.

The event comes ahead of a wind farm family fun day on 27 September to celebrate this landmark with the local community. It takes place between 10am-2pm at Owd Betts pub in Norden and includes wind farm tours.

The new 26-turbine, 65MW scheme can generate enough low carbon energy to meet the average annual electricity needs of around 40,000 homes, roughly half the houses in a town the size of Rochdale.

Richard Dibley, Peel Energy's development manager, said the opening marked a great milestone for everyone who had supported and worked on the scheme.

He said: "It has been quite a journey from the day the site was first identified, and we'd like to thank everyone who has supported us along the way.

"I am delighted this scheme is now complete and is set to provide low carbon energy for years to come. Schemes such as Scout Moor wind farm demonstrate the effectiveness of wind farms."

Peel Energy, part of the Peel Group, is at the forefront of delivering low carbon energy for the UK.

It has a balanced portfolio of more than 3GW in generation or development including wind, tidal power, energy from waste, biomass and multi-fuel power plants with carbon capture and storage.

That's enough to power the average electricity needs of more than 3 million homes in North West England. Or put another way, enough for every home in the city regions of Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester combined.

Richard added: "With a heritage of supporting low carbon energy projects over the last 20 years, we have the determination and expertise to develop, build and operate low carbon projects across the country."

Scout Moor was first identified as an excellent site for a wind farm in 2001, and planning permission was granted in 2005 following a public inquiry.

The wind farm is now set to provide a lasting legacy.

Not only will it play a significant role in helping the Government meet it targets on cutting its carbon emissions, but Peel Energy will also provide £500,000 over the lifetime of the wind farm to help local landowners create bio-diverse habitats on land surrounding Scout Moor.

This could enhance up to 500 hectares of land – the size of 700 football pitches.
