Major energy scheme planned for Cheshire

13 October 2009

Proposals for a major renewable energy scheme for Cheshire have been unveiled by Peel Energy.

If approved, the scheme near Frodsham would meet the average electricity needs of around 30,000 households - that is equivalent to more than a fifth of the homes in Cheshire West and Chester.

The site occupies land between the Manchester Ship Canal and the M56, and has been used as a deposit ground for the disposal of material dredged from the canal.

The proposals forms part of Peel's vision to develop the mouth of the Mersey into a "renewables hub" and sits alongside its plans to harness tidal power from the River Mersey.

Cheshire-based environmental specialists are carrying out detailed studies on the site, and, although the exact of the scope has still to be decided, early indications show it could be a good location for up to 21 turbines.

Richard Dibley, Peel Energy's Development Manager, said: "We are still carrying out detailed technical and environmental studies on the grounds, but we believe it is a good place for a Wind Farm."

"If approved, this scheme will meet not only the needs of 30,000 homes, but also more than a quarter of Cheshire's renewable energy target for 2020."

Although Peel Energy does not anticipate submitting a planning application for the Frodsham Wind Farm until 2010, it is committed to engaging with the community regarding the proposals from an early stage.

Once the plans are more defined, public exhibitions will be held to give residents the opportunity to speak to environmental experts and to see photomontages of how the Wind Farm may look.
