Sheerness Wind Farm gets green light

5 March 2009

Plans to build a wind farm in the Port of Sheerness have been approved by Swale Borough Council.

The scheme was given the go-ahead following wide public consultation, independent reports on the suitability of the location and a site visit by councillors.

Once operational, the four turbines will generate enough energy to meet the average electricity needs of around 5,500 homes.

Peel Wind Power's development manager, Richard Dibley, said he was delighted the scheme had been approved.

Richard said: "We truly believe the industrial setting at the port is a great place for a small wind farm and are very pleased the council has approved our plans.

"The vast majority of feedback to the scheme has been extremely positive, but we recognise that a wind farm development is something new for many people.

"Over the coming months, and indeed years, we are determined to work closely with local communities and keep residents involved in the progress of the wind farm at every stage."

Councillors gave the go-ahead to the 10MW scheme, subject to planning conditions, at a meeting of Swale Borough Council's planning committee.

The wind farm alone has the potential to meet 13 per cent of the possible wind energy target for the Kent region.
