On Friday 17 December, Peel Energy submitted a planning application to Melton Borough Council for a Wind Farm of nine turbines at the site of the former Asfordby mine.
In response to the feedback from the local community at the various consultation evens and the results of technical assessments, Peel Energy’s final application includes several changes to the scheme initially proposed. The Wind Farm at Asfordby would have 9 turbines rather than the 10 originally planned, and one turbine has been reduced in height to improve the balance and cohesion of the cluster.
If the Asfordby Wind Farm is granted planning permission in the New Year, it is estimated that the wind would generate at least 40 GWh of electricity each year, which is enough electricity to meet the needs of more than 8,500 homes, or 33% of the households in Melton Mowbray (figure based on actual wind data recorded on site).
Patrick Keogh, Development Manager for Peel Energy said:
“We are grateful to all the members of the local community that took the opportunity to attend the consultation events over the last few months, from the drop-in sessions in August to the public exhibition in October. The final application is a testament to the value of these public events as our modified proposals show. Peel Energy remains committed to ongoing consultation and providing further information as the application reaches planning committee stage and beyond.”
