Peel Energy, the company behind proposals to submit a planning application for a new biomass energy plant at Corpach harbour in Fort Williams, has announced details of two public exhibitions aimed at providing local people and interested parties with more information on the project.
The Corpach Biomass Energy Plant (CBEP) would produce electricity for the national grid using around 250,000 tonnes of timber each year to generate heat and drive a steam turbine. It is proposed that the fuel for the plant would be wood derived from forestry and forest industries in Scotland, taking advantage of the site's excellent transport links.
The scheme would generate enough electricity to meet the average needs of approximately 37,000 homes - equivalent to more than one-third of the homes in the Highland Council region. The plant would also be able to provide renewable heat that could be utilised by industry, businesses and housing in the area.
The facility would provide full time permanent jobs for around 17 people in a mixture of managerial, administrative, technical and manual posts and represent an investment into the local economy of around £70 million. The planning application for the development is expected to be submitted to Highland Council at the beginning of 2011.
The dates and venues of the community consultations are:
- Monday 8 November from 4pm - 9pm, Treslaig Hall, Treslaig
- Tuesday 9 November from 1pm - 9pm, The Moorings Hotel, Banavie
Jonathan Burley, Peel Energy's Development Manager, said:
"Although we do not plan to submit a forman planning application until next year, Peel Energy is committed to engaging with the local community at the earliest stage possible."
"These two exhibitions will provide local people and other interested parties with further information about our plans for the CBEP. Members of the Peel Energy team and our specialist consultatnts will be on hand to answer any questions which people have and to provide additional details on our proposals."
"We have carried out detailed technical and environmental studies on the site and believe it is an ideal location for a biomass plant."
Further information on the project is available at www.peelenergy.co.uk/cbep including a feedback questionnaire.
