Local firm has designs on new biomass plant

November 2010

Inverness-based architect and design consultancy, HRI-Architects LLP, has been selected to design the proposed new biomass energy plant at Corpach Harbour in Fort William.

Peel Energy, the company behind the proposals, has appointed the award winning practice to design the plant which will be submitted for planning application approval next year.

The Corpach Biomass Energy Plant (CBEP) would use around 250,000 tonnes of timber each year to raise steam for the steam turbine and electrical generator which in turn will generate renewable electricity into the National Grid. It is proposed that the fuel for the plant would be wood derived from forestry and forest industries in Scotland, taking advantage of the site’s excellent transport links.

The proposed location of the plant is the former site of the Arjo Wiggins pulp and paper mill which closed in 2005 with the loss of 126 jobs.

Andrew Bruce, Partner of HRI Architects LLP, said: “HRI are delighted to be involved with this important project, exemplifying the effective and sustainable redevelopment of Fort William and Corpach’s industrial heritage. The development represents the future economic potential of renewable biomass energy and the important role which the Highlands of Scotland can play in this.

“The architectural design approach focused on expressing the function of the plant, maximising the use of natural materials, making a sensitive but effective statement in the larger landscape and meeting rigorous sustainability and recyclability criteria.

“The design of the plant will incorporate a high degree of timber structural elements and timber cladding. We want to express the fact that the plant is using a renewable fuel source in the design and also ensure that the external appearance of the building relates to its environment.”

Jonathan Burley, Peel Energy’s Development Manager, said: “We are delighted that our proposals will create opportunities for the local community and are pleased to announce that local firm HRI-Architects LLP will design the proposed development.

“The area has a long industrial heritage and we hope to tap into this with the creation of around 15-20 full time jobs in managerial, technical, administrative and manual posts as well as a large number of jobs during construction.

“We do not plan to submit a formal planning application until next year however we believe Corpach to be the ideal location for a biomass plant and Peel Energy is committed to engaging with the local community as the development progresses.”
