Over 250 people enjoy Scout Moor Wind Farm public open day

27 September 2010

More than 250 people took the opportunity to stand inside a wind turbine and find out more about wind energy when they attended a public open day at Scout Moor wind farm on Saturday, 25 September.

Visitors to the event, which was organised by Peel Energy, commented on how interesting it was to learn about how the wind farm works and how it is helping to meet our energy demands. Engineers from Nordex, the wind turbine supplier, and B9Energy, the site manager, were also on hand to answer numerous technical questions from visitors of all ages.

Jonathan England, Peel Energy director, said, “The Scout Moor wind farm has been operational since 2008, and has been making a significant contribution to local energy supplies during this time, but we wanted people to know that the wind farm is offering much more to the local area and community.

“The moor is an excellent place to view wildlife, and a proportion of the revenue from the wind farm goes directly towards protecting and enhancing local habitats through the Habitat Enhancement Plan fund.

“We also want to ensure that the local community makes the most of Scout Moor as an accessible and ideal location for walking, cycling or just admiring the beautiful views.
“We spend a lot of time talking to local schools and groups about the wind farm and the role it plays in securing our future energy needs. It was great to be able to share this experience with the wider public.

“We would like to thank all of those who attended and made it such a successful day. It was a good way to celebrate its second birthday.”

Comments from visitors included: “Most interesting and informative”; “Good walking access to the moors”; “Fascinating visit, enjoyed it and learnt a lot”; “Very informative, especially on answering questions from a child’s perspective”; “Great experience”; “Fantastic day out”; “Very impressive”; and simply “Thank you”.

At 65 MW, Scout Moor wind farm is currently the largest operational onshore scheme in England and has the capacity to produce enough electricity for the average annual needs of approximately 40,000 homes throughout its 25-year lifespan.

If anyone unable to attend the open day has any questions about the wind farm, they can contact the Peel Energy team on 0161 629 8414 or by email at energy@peel.co.uk.
