Peel Energy both welcomes and endorses the demand by Stretford and Urmston MP Kate Green for a debate in Parliament to discuss the use of biomass as a renewable fuel to generate electricity.
A Parliamentary debate would help people to understand better the issues of energy security and the requirements to generate more renewable energy as well as allaying concerns about public health.
The Barton Renewable Energy Plant that is being proposed by Peel Energy conforms to all aspects of the government’s energy strategy and would comply entirely with strict emissions limits that are in place to protect public health.
Peel Energy project director Jon England said: “The government wants more electricity generated from renewable sources and has already stated that an important role exists for expanded biomass generation.”
“The Barton proposal ticks all the boxes. We are aware that some residents are concerned about air quality and we believe that a Parliamentary debate would help to demonstrate that the power plant would pose no threat to public health. It would also highlight the urgent need to get more renewable energy generation online as soon as possible.”
The Barton Renewable Energy Plant would generate enough low carbon electricity to power as many as 37,000 homes and divert as much as 140,000 tonnes of recycled wood from landfill annually. It is also proposed that renewable heat would also be fed to businesses and homes by an underground pipe network.
