2009-2010 Grants funding still available

Three projects have been allocated grants in the 2009-2010 round of funding that has just been determined by the grants panel.

A residual amount of funding is available for 2009-2010 following the allocation of these grants. Further applications are therefore welcomed. The deadline for new applications is 28 February 2010. The funding for successful applicants will be available immediately following the panel's decision in March 2009.

Please note that applications are welcomed throughout the year to be considered by the panel over the summer months with the aim of awarding funds by October.

2008-2009 Grants

A large volume of applicants came forward in the first year of funding for 2008 - 2009, six projects deemed by the panel of expert ecologists to have the highest potential to deliver maximum habitat enhancement were awarded funding totalling £39,460 in September 2008].

The projects have a strong focus on the re-wetting of blanket bog that is currently in a degraded state. This work will contribute towards the bog continuing to be a major carbon sync within the UK and Western Europe.

Site visits to these projects were made throughout the summer to assess and discuss with applicants the initial progress that had been made since the improvement works had been carried out.

The improvements made in this early stage of the funding scheme have been widely regarded as a success by all involved. Through a direct result of funding being received, significant areas of the South Pennine Moors near Rossendale and Rochdale have already started to see improvements in their habitats.

This enhancement has come in the form of increased diversity in fauna and flora, including programs that encourage the breeding of wader bird species.
